November 4, 2009

Professors Steve Oakes and Connie Krause spoke about the various career paths available to Pharm.D. students and Pharm-Tox students respectively. Professor Oakes distributed a number of handouts regarding the Pharm-Tox program and its various paths. Dr. Kraus spoke about her own career path as a pharmacist and Clinical Professor for UW-Madison's School of Pharmacy. Professor Krause mentioned an informative Pharmacy Career WEBSITE.

We kicked off the semester by playing a game of Bingo ice breaker, electing two freshman representatives, and consuming pizza and soda! Additionally, membership information was covered and explained and can be found in the Active Membership tab.

 

April 16, 2009:

GUEST SPEAKER:
Dr. Lisa Gryttenholm, Pharm.D., R.Ph.

Dr. Gryttenholm is a Senior Clinical Pharmacist and Clinical Instructor with University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics (UWHC).  She received her B.S. in Pharmacy and Pharm.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  In addition to decentral staffing she spends50% of her time as the Senior Clinical Pharmacist for Patient Care Services. Her responsibilities include: providing leadership and direction for the pharmacists on practice issues and medication utilization, coordination of new and changing clinical patient care services, serving as a peer resource on clinical topics and mentorship of pharmacy students and residents.  She is involved with the Acute Care of Elders (ACE) consult team and a variety of interdisciplinary committees within UWHC.  Preceptor development, patient education, and geriatrics are her interest areas.

 

April 2, 2009:

GUEST SPEAKERS: Jo Anne Preston, Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative, Sauk City,  Wisconsin; Craig Griffis, R.Ph., pharmacist with Community Health Network in Berlin, Wisconsin; Darla Wilson, R.Ph., pharmacist with Tomah Memorial Hospital, Tomah Wisconsin

A taped presentation was shown which included a panel discussion of pharmacy practice in rural Wisconsin hospitals, including several pharmacists in that practice as well as a UW SOP pharmacy student doing a clerkship in one of the rural hospitals. The panel discussed the benefits of working in such a practice and the challenges as well.   All are members of the Rural WI Health Cooperative who hosts a roundtable of pharmacists from the member hospitals several times a year to share best practice and network.

The taped presentation was followed by a question and answer session with the guest speakers.

 

March 26, 2009:

GUEST SPEAKER:
Dr. Denise Pigarelli, Pharm.D., BC-ADM, R.Ph.

Dr. Pigarelli is a pharmacist and Clinical Associate Professor from the UW-Madison School of Pharmacy.  Dr. Pigarelli completed a specialty practice residency in ambulatory care at the William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin in 1994, and she practiced as a primary care clinical pharmacist at the Carl T. Hayden VAMC in Phoenix, Arizona before joining the School of Pharmacy in 1996.  rofessor Pigarelli currently practices at the Madison VA in Diabetes Clinic; her main pharmacotherapeutic interests include diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.  Her research interests include clinical and quality of life outcomes of drug therapy and pharmaceutical care.

 

January 28, 2009:


-Dr. Connie Kraus, Pharm.D., BCPS, R.Ph. came to speak about opportunities for students interested in global health.  She emphasized the new programs that are being implemented by the UW Center for Global Health, the UW School of Pharmacy, and School of Pharmacy student organizations.

-Club members were reminded of the $5 semester dues and the two volunteer activities (at least one through the club) required to be considered an official club member.  Club money is being used to pay for food at meetings, Ronald McDonald House food, and to sponsor the club's Relay for Life team.

-Members were able to sign up for volunteer activities and Relay for Life at the end of the meeting.  More email's will be sent out with future club volunteer activities.
